DoT plans to free spectrum in 60 GHz band for providing Wi-Fi services

November 21, 2014

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to free up spectrum in 60 GHz band for providing Wi-Fi services in public places across the country. In this regard, DoT has identified 45 cities and 705 tourist locations to provide Wi-Fi services. Further, it is planning to fund the capital required for implementation of these services through the Universal Services Obligation Fund, while the operational expenses will be met through user fees.

Meanwhile, DoT has initiated talks with the telecom operators to roll-out their network for offering these services. These operators can then use the spectrum in 60 GHz band without any licence fee or spectrum charge.
